Larger sized vintage Holophane 2 piece globe has a patent date embossed in the top rim of: Holophane made in USA Oct 29 1912 (and 2180, model number). Holophane shades are prized for their unusually crystal clear glass as well as the "prisms" which line the inner and outer surfaces of the glass. These prisms direct the light waves (by refraction) to where the light is most needed. Although this phenomena has been known for centuries, Holophane was the first to really capitalize on it and some of their research standards are still being used today.
These are great antique fixtures for vintage kitchens, especially over counters and work spaces.
